Edinburgh is the capital city of Scotland with a population 507,170. It is Scotland’s second most populous city and the seventh most populous in the United Kingdom. The city isthe seat of the Scottish Government, the Scottish Parliament and the supreme courts of Scotland.
By the first half of the 18th century, despite rising prosperity evidenced by its growing importance as a banking centre, Edinburgh was described as one of Europe’s most densely populatedtowns. In the second half of the century, Edinburgh became a major intellectual centre, earning it the nickname “Athens of the North”.
Although Edinburgh’s traditional industries of printing, brewing and distilling continued to grow in the 19th century, there was not as much industry as in other cities in Britain. Today, Edinburgh is financial, administrative and commercial centre.
Many cultural institutions such as Royal Lyceum Theatre, King’s Theatre, Edinburgh Festival Theatre and Edinburgh Playhouse, Usher Hall, The Hub, the Assembly Rooms and the Queen’s Hall as well as The Scottish Chamber Orchestra are based in the city and have a well-known reputation throughout the United Kingdom.
The city is well known for its festivals: Edinburgh Festival Fringe, the Edinburgh International Festival, the Edinburgh Military Tattoo, the Edinburgh International Book Festival, Edinburgh International Film Festival and Edinburgh International Science Festival.
Edinburgh Self-Storage: At A Glance
With such a large population living in Edinburgh, moving in and out, there are numerous self-storages available. Choosing the one that suits your needs should not be a problem. City and its surrounding host five self-storages different in size with one of them located just near city centre. You can use storages for differently sized items: from books and clothes that overcrowd your home, to robust pieces of furniture that need to be laid aside while moving, as well as for short and long term storing of goods.
Does Edinburgh student population affect self-storage prices?
Edinburgh hosts four universities: University of Edinburgh, Heriot-Watt University, Queen Margaret University and Napier Technical College. Students make up around one-fifth of the population.
Every year, students move in and out of dorm rooms. However, student budget is limited, and it often doesn’t allow moving furniture, books and other belongings all the way back home. Keeping things in local self-storage is more convenient, and many students as well as owners of self-storages know that. That is why in many places with large student population some storage facilities offer discounts specifically for students to help them afford a storage unit.
