Blackpool is a seaside resort on the Lancashire coast in North West England, on the Irish Sea.The seafront consists of a 7-mile sandy beach, with a flat coastline in the south of the district. With a population of 139,720 it is the most populous town in Lancashire.
The most significant event in the early growth of the town occurred in 1846, with the arrival of the railway. A rapid influx of visitors, arriving by rail, provided the motivation for entrepreneurs to build accommodation and create new attractions. Additional impulse for growth was introduction of electricity as in 1879, Blackpool became the first municipality in the world to have electric street lighting.
Today, Blackpool is major touristic centre and a summer entertainment venue, specializing in variety shows, but the district also hosts a large number of small businesses and self-employed people. Retail is also becoming a major contributor to Blackpool’s economy.
As a touristic centre, there are many shows featuring entertainers catering to a broad range of tastes, from family friendlyto the ‘adults only’ humour. The Grand Theatre is the best known entertaining spot, but the town also plays host to the longest running seaside show in Britain, Legends, which features multiple tribute artistes with a live band and dance troupe.
Outside the main holiday season, Blackpool’s Winter Gardens routinely hosts major political and trade union conferences
